Kain Elder form Sculpt medium close-up by TheHylden
Kain Elder form Sculpt medium close-up
This is the final Kain render modeled first in 3D-Coat, finished in Zbrush, polypainted in Zbrush, finished texturing in Photoshop. A fully sculpted redo of the GlyphX model seen in the Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Full Motion Video intros of the Legacy of Kain series, by Crystal Dynamics and Eidos/Square Enix.

Low Poly model Rendered in Marmoset Toolbag 2. Normal Maps, displacement, gloss and specular maps, for items. Metalness maps for some metallic items and his skin. Cavity, occlusion used in spots, etc.

This is a neutral shot, in neutral lighting. I'm working on a couple of poses of him in a scene now, where his face will have more expression.

You can view the full model here:… and www.hylden-dimension.holocron3… with links to see more pics of him.

Edit: 11/12/14: Final model, reduced from 55,000 to 37,000 polygons (better topological flow, too); final teeth corrections, eye lid, face corrections, hair corrections, crown, cape edges frayed.

Edit 10/05/14: I'm touching up some things on Kain. I always wanted the hint of a metallic sheen at certain angles on his skin, but before the metallness maps were too metallic. I've got a better compromise going in Marmoset with a little metallic and some subsurface skin feel to it, too. It's much closer to what it should be now, I think. Kain looks better for it. Somehow, it made him look more surprised, or something before.

I'll be updating all of his images soon.

I am a freelance 3D modeler and texture artist. I've learned that part on my own, studying at college instead for my BA in film at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. As such, I'm versed also in film directing, editing, and writing. I hope to bring that sense of story and cinematic understanding to my 3D work.

I currently reside near Baltimore, Maryland.

I have a Facebook group, where like-minded fans of my Legacy of Kain fan models and art can gather. Feel free to visit, if interested:…

Sure thing :) Always nice to see your models and textures. I've done my own full character modeling and texture work, which is forefront on my DA page here. I hope to be able to get work doing it. Congratulations on your new position.

Saw you where working on a Human Kain so I figured I should point to this…

It's a bit on the skinny side if you ask me but its very good.

Thanks. Yeah, this is a great re-imagining of the BO1 menus screen version of him. I liked this far more than the new version he made, or was asked to make.

I've been using the ingame BO1 menu art, and this as a clearer version of that, for inspiration for the armor. For Kain's features, I'm drawing continuity to his elder Kain form, so his human form is what his elder form would have evolved from, or a regression of that form. I also look to Simon Templeman's pics for references on how his skin folds and any help from those features I can use.

I'm weighing a lot of stuff in this creation, heh.
