Human-kain-front-body by TheHylden
Human-kain-front-body
Human Kain, rendered in Marmoset Toolbag 2. This should be the final of his skin detail and his hair (low polygon strips with alphas). Modeled to be the base that vampire Kain and eventually elder Kain from Soul Reaver 1 evolve from. This is the low poly model. Original high polygon model made in Zbrush, retopology in 3D-Coat, some Maya and Max involved. Textued in Zbrush and Photoshop.

I'll work on his Blood Omen 1 armor next, but first, I have work to do on vampire Raziel.

8/3015: Update on the model. About a month ago I tackled some things on the face that weren't right and also the waist. Originally, I kept the waist too trim thinking that the added armor and clothing would need that so the body didn't penetrate through. But, turns out that I gave enough room so that doesn't happen and now here's the body at proper proportions. Working on the human armor now.

Human Kain Front Chin Reduced by TheHylden
Human Kain Front Chin Reduced
Progress on my human Kain model. Rendered in Marmoset Toolbag 2.

Update: took off a little too much. Kain needs to still have the heroic chin, just not the huge one from before. Widened the front just a bit. Also lessened the nose, flared the ears out just a bit. I think I like this. It feels like the right face now.

8/30/15: A bit of an update. A month ago I worked to make sure the eyes and mouth area were correct. The low polygon model was a little off. Working on the armor and outfit and more to come.

Lieutenant Vampire Raziel Collage by TheHylden
Lieutenant Vampire Raziel Collage
Recreation of the GlyphX Lieutenant vampire Raziel model from the cinematic intro of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. Modeled in Zbrush, cleanup and low polywork in Maya, some in 3D-Coat, and UVing in 3D-Coat (some in Zbrush and Max). Polypainted in Zbrush, finalized texturing work in Photoshop. Maya for rigging. Rendered in Marmoset Toolbag 2. The original model's images from the intro and promotional shots, and images of David Bowie (also the inspiration for Raziel's face o the original model) were used for reference when modeling him.

I tried to stay true to the GlyphX model, as best I could, in everything that would make sense. Minor discrepancy in the metal wraps around his chest. I have mine with the bottom wrap on to and the main link to the chest and back locks. My only reasoning for that was certain ways some of the images from the intro looked, but I did see later on others I have and the model sheet for him that the top metal wrap was on top. not sure how much that matters to the end design, but for right now, I'm not bothering with it. The second major alteration is that I added an additional segment to the "boot" portion of his greaves that cover his toes. In the original model, the Lieutenants' feet have to bend when they walk, but they only seemed to have a single metal sheet covering each toe, yet they also have rivets where the toes bend at the knuckle, so it seems that it would make much more sense for these rivets to hold an extra metal segment, like any other medieval greave with a boot would have -- like the greaves I conceptualized for human Kain to have. I did note this before, but some may not have seen: the wings also are like they were envisioned to connect to him on the model sheet. The intro has them lower coming out of his pants, but doesn't line up with where they come out of his back on his later ruined wraith form, so this is the best place for them to be for continuity. I think when they modeled him, they probably had an easier time placing them there for a host of reasons, like that they needed this body to be used for all of the Lieutenants and perhaps if they're floating on the back, they wouldn't look right. You can fake it better coming out of the darker pants.

Everything else is as accurate as I think I can make it. For Raziel's lips, I tried to make them feel natural, darkened by the curse and with a bit of a stain from the blood he drinks (as noted once by Daniel Cabuco that this was the intent for the look), but not veering into the black lipstick look that the intro model does wind up having.

I am a freelance 3D modeler and texture artist. I've learned that part on my own, studying at college instead for my BA in film at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. As such, I'm versed also in film directing, editing, and writing. I hope to bring that sense of story and cinematic understanding to my 3D work.

I currently reside near Baltimore, Maryland.

I have a Facebook group, where like-minded fans of my Legacy of Kain fan models and art can gather. Feel free to visit, if interested: www.facebook.com/hyldendimensi…

Your LoK work is amazing! It's one of my favorite series since I first played Soul Reaver for the Dreamcast, but before that I had played the demo for the PS1 and with that tiny bit of gameplay I was sold! I almost had a fit when it said "to be continued" at the end (and then again when the second SR and BO came out)and would replay it over and over. I can beat it with my eyes closed and quote the dialogue as I play. XD
I've been playing them all again, starting with the original Blood Omen because I've had never played it before and will marathon it all the way to Defiance. I'm also introducing my husband to them as he never knew about them.
So, as I'm reliving my obsession I came across your gallery and I couldn't NOT watch you!
Your renders are beautiful and detailed and 100% accurate! Really shows how much you love the series with such dedication to details. Even your drawings look really good. A little bit more anatomy practice and they'd be perfect, but since you're so good with coloring it doesn't even matter. I wish I could paint/color like that! I'm still learning digital colors since I recently aquired a Surface Pro and I'm able to draw on the screen directly, but I've got a lot to learn.

Since I've started creating more art again, I'll be using some of your images as reference and will, of course, credit when I upload anything in which I used them. I don't know if you're still active, but know I would LOVE to see more. Do you take commissions by any chance? Perhaps just coloring my own lineart? Let me know if you're interested and how much it would be to know if I can manage. I'd definitively save for it if I can't immediately. You can even choose if you'd like to see something specific.

Thanks for the kind words and the watch. My dad has some severe health issues he's recovering from, so this has taken up my focus, but we're home again and I am trying to get back into my projects a bit. It's day by day right now, though. Yes, my proportions in the paintings are flaws at times. I'm glad, on that front, that I discovered digital sculpting. I find I work better on accuracy in 3D now.

I'm not sure just yet what time I'd be able to devote to commissions just yet, but I'll keep it in mind.

I've recently had the urge to replay these breathtaking series, and while I was looking for a texture revamp I stumbled upon your deviant profile. Your work is splendid. I seem to have trouble locating the download links, they appear to be broken, could you possibly be able to send me Kain and Raziel (with cloak and wings), I would very much appreciate it.

Kind regards.
